How to load cargo safely
Organising the load
Placing the load: Before loading, think carefully about how best to arrange the individual items in the van. Heavier items should go at the bottom and towards the front of the vehicle (by the bulkhead) to lower the centre of gravity and improve the stability of the van.
Balance: Make sure the weight is spread evenly across the whole cargo area to avoid overloading one side of the vehicle, which could hurt its handling.
Using the right equipment
Pallets and boxes: Use pallets for heavier loads and sturdy boxes for smaller items. Boxes should be good quality and strong enough to carry the weight of what is inside and not collapse when stacked.
Protective materials: Wrap fragile items in protective materials such as bubble wrap or blankets so they don't get damaged in transit.
Securing the load
Cross straps: Use straps or belts that let you fasten the load firmly to the anchor points in the van. Cross-strapping makes sure items won't move while driving or in corners.
Tensioning: Make sure the straps are tight enough that the load cannot shift. Use ratchet tensioners or a similar device to get the right tension.
Anti-slip mats: Place the mats under the load to stop it sliding around while driving. These mats increase friction and are a great addition to lashing straps.
