What to watch out for when choosing a van rental company

What to watch out for when choosing a van rental company

The hourly price tells you nothing

Offers are hard to compare because every rental company counts something different. Some include only the rental itself and add everything else on top. Before you compare two numbers, find out what's behind them.

Kilometres

Ask about the mileage limit. The usual model is "100 km included, every extra one charged" — and when you're moving across Prague with two trips there and back, the limit runs out faster than you'd expect. With us, mileage within the Czech Republic is unlimited.

Deposit

The deposit is the most common hidden cost. Several thousand blocked on your card isn't actually taken from you, but you can't use it — and releasing it sometimes takes weeks. With us, you don't pay a deposit at all.

Fuel

The "full to full" rule is fair and easy to check. Watch out for versions where the rental company tops up the fuel at its own rate — which tends to be well above the price at the pump.

Excess

Ask how much you'll pay in case of damage. The amount of the excess varies depending on the insurance you choose, and it's a figure that should be clear before you sign, not afterwards.

What tells you more about a rental company than the price list

What the pick-up looks like

A good rental company insists on photo documentation. It protects both sides — you have proof of the condition in which you took the vehicle, and the rental company has proof of its condition on return. If nobody takes any photos, that's a warning sign.

Availability outside working hours

A move rarely fits into office hours. Check whether you can collect the van in the evening or on a Sunday, or whether you depend on the branch's opening hours.

What happens if something goes wrong

Ask who you contact if you get a flat tyre or a breakdown. At a moment like that, a phone number that someone answers even on a Saturday afternoon is worth more than a discount of twenty crowns an hour.

Get ready on your side too

Have your documents to hand. As standard, you need two valid proofs of identity, one of which is a category B driving licence.

Check the type of gearbox. Our vans have a manual gearbox, so you can't drive them with a driving licence restricted to automatics — it's better to know that in advance than in the car park.

Think about the size. An unnecessarily large van is harder to park, while a small one will make you do two trips. You'll find an overview of dimensions and prices in our fleet, and more answers in the FAQ section.
