Van rental extension: when it's possible and how to do it

When a van rental extension is possible

Extending a van rental depends on just one thing — whether the van has another booking after yours. If it's free, an extension is usually simple. If another customer is waiting for it, it can't be extended and you need to find another solution.

Get in touch as soon as possible

The worst option is to stay quiet and hope. As soon as you know you won't make the original time, let us know. An hour in advance is better than ten minutes after the deadline, and it makes it far more likely we can hold the van for you.

Don't leave it to the last minute at busy times

Vans are busiest at weekends and at the end of the month. At those times there's a much higher chance that another booking follows yours. If you're planning a job where you're not sure about the timing, book a longer period right from the start.

An extension is about time, not kilometres

Mileage within the Czech Republic is unlimited. So you don't have to worry about having driven more than you expected — we don't charge for extra kilometres. All that matters is how long you have the van. Bear in mind, though, that the vans may only be driven in the Czech Republic.

Give a specific time, not "a bit longer"

The more precise the information you give, the faster it can be sorted out. The difference between "I need two more hours" and "I'll bring it back tomorrow morning" is crucial. It tells us whether the extension fits between bookings or not.

Other terms don't change with an extension

An extension changes only the duration, nothing else. Only the person named in the contract may continue to drive, and the vehicle is returned with a full tank to the same location you picked it up from. You don't pay a deposit even with an extension, and nothing is blocked on your card.

Check the price for the specific van

The extra charge for an extension matches the standard rate for that vehicle. It varies with the size of the van, so you'll find the exact amount directly with the vehicle in our fleet. You don't pay a deposit with us, so an extension won't affect any block on your card.

Payment is again made online

You pay the extra by card online; we don't accept cash. So keep the card you paid for the booking with to hand during the rental, so that looking for details doesn't hold up the extension.

How to handle an extension without complications

Build in a buffer when you book

Most people underestimate loading, not driving. A drive across Prague takes a predictable amount of time, but carrying things down from the fifth floor without a lift can take hours longer. Adding a buffer in advance is easier and cheaper than sorting out an extension mid-job.

What to do if an extension isn't possible

If another booking follows yours, return the van on time. A late return messes up the next customer's plans and exposes you to extra charges under the terms and conditions. If you know the job won't be finished, the solution is a second, shorter booking on another day.

An unnecessarily long rental isn't a win either

A van standing outside your house all day doesn't do anything for you. Think about whether you'd be better off with two shorter bookings than one long one — say, moving furniture in the morning and a second run with boxes in the evening.

Keep an eye on where the van is parked in the meantime

An extension often means the van spends the night somewhere. Parking in blue zones is not part of the service, so think ahead about where you'll leave the van. Underground car parks are usually out of the question because of the height — bear that in mind when looking for a spot.

Leave yourself time for the return

The vehicle is returned with a full tank to the same location you picked it up from. Refuelling and the drive back take time that people often don't include in their plan. Fifteen to twenty extra minutes is a sensible buffer.

Returns work around the clock

You're not tied to a branch's opening hours. Pick-up and return are contactless through the web app, so you can drop the van off late in the evening or on a Sunday. You put the keys back in the compartment on the passenger side and photograph the vehicle just as you did at pick-up.

Don't count on "nobody minding a few minutes"

The vehicle is usually ready for the next customer straight after you. So half an hour's delay doesn't just affect us, but also the person waiting with a whole flat packed up. If you know you won't make it, get in touch before the deadline passes.

Keep your photos after the return too

Documenting the condition protects both sides. Photos from pick-up and return are the simplest way to prove what condition the van was in. You'll find more practical answers in the FAQ and on our blog.
