L1H1 or L3H2? A guide to van sizes

L1H1 or L3H2? A guide to van sizes

What do the abbreviations L and H mean?

Van manufacturers use this system to distinguish the dimensions of the cargo area:

L (Length): Indicates the length of the vehicle. L1 is the shortest version, L2 longer, L3 extended and L4 extra long.
H (Height): Indicates the height of the vehicle. H1 is standard height (low roof), H2 high roof and H3 extra high.

Each manufacturer uses slightly different centimetres, but the principle stays the same.

L1H1: Agility in city traffic

This size is ideal for those who need to get around the narrow streets of city centres or need to park in garages with limited height.

Suitable for: Taking home a purchase from IKEA, transporting a washing machine, a fridge or a small number of boxes.
Advantages: Manoeuvrability comparable to a car, lower fuel consumption and easy parking.

L2H2: The golden mean

Offers the ideal balance between load volume and external dimensions.

Suitable for: Moving smaller flats (studio or one-bedroom) or delivering building materials.
Features: In an H2 cargo area, a person of average height can already stand up, which makes loading and handling things much easier.

L3H2 and larger: Maximum space for big jobs

If you are planning to move a large flat or a house, or need to transport items longer than 3 metres (e.g. beams, pipes, carpets), you will need the L3 version.

Capacity: The L3 version usually holds 4 to 5 Euro pallets.
What to watch out for: These vehicles are already very long. When turning, you need to take corners wider and allow for a larger turning circle.

How to choose the right size?

Before booking, we recommend taking a few simple measurements:

Measure the longest item: If your sofa is 2.5 metres long, it won't fit in an L1.
Consider the height of the load: If you are carrying a tall wardrobe in one piece, look for at least an H2 version.
Check your route: If you are driving into underground car parks, an H2 version probably won't fit (the height is usually over 2.5 metres).

Choosing the right van will ensure a safe journey without unnecessary complications. If you are still not sure which size to choose, don't hesitate to ask us for advice.
